Understanding Window Energy Efficiency Ratings for Grand Blanc, MI Homes

When selecting new windows in Grand Blanc, MI, look for the NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) label. It provides key performance ratings:

  • U-Factor: Measures how well a window prevents heat from escaping out of your home. The lower the U-Factor, the better the window insulates. This is particularly important for Grand Blanc, MI's heating season. Look for low U-Factors (typically 0.30 or lower is good).
  • Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): Measures how much solar heat enters your home through the window. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat it transmits. In Grand Blanc, MI, a lower SHGC (e.g., 0.30 or lower) is generally preferred to reduce summer cooling costs, but balancing some passive solar gain in winter might be considered depending on your specific home orientation and climate zone within the state.
  • Visible Transmittance (VT): Measures how much visible light comes through the window (a number between 0 and 1). Higher VT means more natural light. This is more about aesthetics than direct energy efficiency, but very dark tints can reduce VT.
  • Air Leakage (AL): Rates how much air passes through joints in the window assembly. A lower AL value (typically 0.3 cfm/ft² or less) means less draftiness. Proper installation by Fortress Exteriors is key to minimizing air leakage.
  • Low-E Coatings: These are microscopically thin, virtually invisible metallic coatings applied to window glass surfaces to reflect heat. Different types of Low-E coatings are optimized for different climates – some primarily block heat gain (good for Grand Blanc, MI summers), while others reduce heat loss (good for winters). We help you choose the right type.
  • Gas Fills (Argon/Krypton): Inert gases sealed between glass panes are denser than air and provide better insulation, reducing U-Factor.Choosing windows with the right combination of low U-Factor, appropriate SHGC for Grand Blanc, MI, and Low-E coatings installed by Fortress Exteriors certified crews is the key to maximizing energy savings and comfort.
